List of channels on Movistar TV (Colombia)
Movistar (legally known as Colombia Telecomunicaciones S.A. E.S.P. BIC) is a Colombian subsidiary of the Spanish company Telefónica.
History
Movistar entered Colombia in 2004 as a mobile phone operator after acquiring all the subsidiaries of BellSouth in Latin America that same year. In Colombia, BellSouth integrated companies like Celumóvil, Celumóvil de la Costa, and Cocelco. With the merger of Telefónica Colombia and Movistar Móviles in 2012, Movistar Colombia became the largest company in the country's telecommunications sector, controlling the infrastructure of the former Telecom Colombia. In addition to offering fixed and mobile telephone services in municipalities with coverage, Movistar Colombia provides commercial, residential, and mobile internet services on its cell phones, as well as satellite television and IPTV through Movistar TV.
Since 2005, it has been the official sponsor of the Colombian Football Federation. In 2006, the Spanish multinational Telefónica acquired 50% plus one share of COLTEL through a public auction. This was sold for a value of 853.577 billion Colombian pesos (269 million dollars). The auction was awarded after an initial process in 2005 that generated criticism from the General Comptroller's Office and was subsequently canceled.
In 2012, Colombia Telecomunicaciones S.A. E.S.P. (formerly Telecom, in which the Nation held 48% of the shares and Telefónica held 52%) was unified with the mobile phone company Movistar. After taking control of Telecom, Telefónica decided to change the name to Telefónica-Telecom, and later to Movistar, although the legal name remains Colombia Telecomunicaciones. In 2013, it had 3,613 employees.
On January 16, 2017, Movistar unveiled a new image, using the same logo but in a 2-D format and focusing on the letter "M" once again. Green and blue returned as its characteristic colors. This new image was launched in Spain on December 1, 2016, and Colombia was the fifth country to adopt it after Spain, Panama, Nicaragua, and Uruguay, along with the slogan "Choose Everything."
At the end of 2017, the Colombian Government announced that it had accelerated the search for potential interested parties for its 32.5% stake in ColTel (Movistar Colombia). By the end of 2020, Movistar TV held an 8.7% share of the subscription television market.
