The American Forces Network (AFN) was established in 1942 during World War II under the name "Armed Forces Radio" to provide American troops stationed abroad with news, entertainment, and information, as well as to maintain morale. Initially broadcasted over shortwave radio, it evolved alongside advancements in technology, transitioning to television and satellite services. Over the years, AFN has expanded to provide continuous 24-hour programming to U.S. military personnel, their families, and other authorised individuals, both overseas and in remote areas. Today, AFN operates under the Department of Defense and is managed by the Defense Media Activity (DMA), ensuring that service members and their families have access to quality, free media services. AFN programming remains a critical tool for maintaining the connection between U.S. military personnel and their homeland, offering a sense of familiarity, comfort, and entertainment.

AFN broadcasts a variety of television and radio channels to cater to the diverse needs of its audience. Its TV lineup includes popular American channels, such as AFN Prime, which airs a mix of the latest U.S. television shows, sports, and movies, as well as AFN Sports, AFN News, and AFN Family, each focusing on specific content like news, sports coverage, or family-friendly programming. Additionally, AFN provides AFN Now, a streaming service allowing military personnel to access programming on-demand. On the radio side, AFN offers stations that cover a wide array of formats, including AFN Rock, AFN News/Talk, AFN Country, and AFN The Eagle, which play music and provide news, talk shows, and other formats.
